Rotarian Adam Matschek is a well-versed property caretaker with an exceptional following – part-time Islanders who own seasonal homes on or near Bainbridge Island.

Growing up in a hardworking family who owned a continuously troublesome vacation home, Adam knows first-hand how disruptive vacation home upkeep can be. What was supposed to be a relaxing place for his family to gather during well-deserved off-time, instead became a fix-it property where the family managed frustrating maintenance and building problems that had occurred while they were away.

Supporting himself with carpentry and landscaping jobs throughout high school and college, Adam furthered his knowledge of the construction trades with hands-on experience. Graduating from Cal Poly with a degree in history and then several years later, the University of Denver with a Master’s degree in economics and international trade, his post-grad employment, though fascinating, was confined to desks.

Over time he became restless with sedentary office life and began thinking about starting his own enterprise. He wanted to build a company that combined his economics knowledge with daily doses of physical activity, and that also enlisted his diverse construction skill set.

He did his market research, identified a business model and target audience well-suited to his objectives, and spent a year setting up his venture, Bainbridge Ready.

Now in his second year, Adam has achieved a milestone — retaining his first-year clients into their second year. His next steps are to grow the business and make a direct hire as workload increases.

How can our fellow Rotarians best help Adam? “Spread the word,” he says, “it's wonderful to support each other’s businesses and goals.” He asks fellow Rotarians to listen for part-time Islanders who have vacation homes here. These homeowners can safeguard their investment by hiring Adam to manage the year-round upkeep and to take care of problems that arise while they are away.

Professionals that network well with Adam include architects, designers, and building tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, and roofers. He frequently refers business to these services and they to him.

“When my clients return to the Island,” he says, “I want to ensure that their time may be spent enjoying life instead of struggling with frustrating home maintenance and repair issues.”
